Sheffield Hallam University

Something a little bit different here at Special Quality Alloys this week…

We were recently approached by the Sheffield Hallam University to ask if we could welcome a small group of students to our site. These students, who were on their first year of a degree in Product Design, were tasked to go out to a number of manufacturing companies in and around Sheffield and present their findings to the classroom upon return.

It is safe to say, the three students that arrived here today were the lucky ones as they were tasked to find out about the wonderful world of FORGING!

It was a pleasure to welcome them here. We enjoyed opening the doors to a new audience which I am sure they enjoyed too. Together, we followed the process from the cutting of the re-forging billet through to the forge where we witnessed a range of Alloy 718 and Alloy 625 rings being produced across our various open-die hammers. This was followed by a demonstration of hardness and ultrasonic testing by our inspection team.

Quite a lot to take in when you are new to forging but we think they will have taken plenty from this experience and will impress their tutors no doubt! Here’s hoping we have inspired the next generation to enter the Sheffield Steel industry!
